In an effort to enhance the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, the Acting Executive Chairman of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Mr. Justice Okoye, held a meeting with the Imo State chapter of the Association of Point of Sales Agents (POS) on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the IIRS Head Office.
The meeting was attended by association leaders Mr. Iwuji Chukwudi and Mr. Wisdom Uwaegbu.
Mr. Okoye welcomed members of the association, while expressing his concern regarding the association’s non-compliance with tax obligations from 2022 to 2024, characterizing the act as a form of tax evasion. He sought to understand the challenges they faced in order to proffer solutions.
The representatives of the association pointed out that the scarcity of cash and interest rates were some of the significant barriers they had and now economic situation is forcing them to purchase cash for their operations and due to that, some of their agents are out of business.
In response, Mr. Okoye inquired about how the IIRS could assist the association in managing their tax liabilities. The association solicited for a harmonization of their tax liabilities for effective tax compliance.
Mr. Okoye stated that the Service will look towards their request based on their level of compliance to outstanding liabilities. He also assured the association of the IIRS willingness to partner with them and requested for a comprehensive list of the association’s members to facilitate effective compliance.
