DRIVER’S LICENCE: AN ESSENTIAL MEANS OF IDENTIFICATION, IIRS CHAIRMAN TELLS FRSC ZONAL COMMANDER

On Tuesday, November 14, 2024, the Zonal Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Anthony E. Oko, along with senior officers, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Mr. Justice R. Okoye.

The IIRS Chairman warmly welcomed the FRSC team and expressed appreciation for the Corps’ assistance towards revenue generation in the State. During the meeting, Mr. Okoye raised concerns regarding challenges in the processing of driver’s licences, including existing backlogs, and requested the Zonal Commander’s support in addressing these issues.

In response, the Zonal Commander congratulated Mr. Okoye on his reappointment, commending his effort since returning to office.

He highlighted the importance of regular tripartite meetings between the IIRS, FRSC, and other stakeholders, as well as the need for public sensitisation regarding the collection of driver’s licences once issued. He proposed a collaborative modality for enforcement, which would help address the challenges more effectively. The Zonal Commander assured the IIRS Chairman of his commitment to providing the necessary assistance to streamline the processing and issuance of driver’s licences in the state.

The Chairman emphasised that the establishment of additional capturing centers in the State would significantly alleviate some of these challenges. He also agreed with creating public awareness, stressing that driver’s licences should not only be seen as a legal requirement for driving but also as a means of identification.

The meeting concluded with continued collaboration to enhance service delivery and improve the efficiency of the driver’s licence issuance process in the State for growth of the Imo State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
