Driving Compliance, Expanding Growth: IIRS Engages Stakeholders on Haulage Collection

The Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS) convened a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on the ongoing Haulage Tax Collection Initiative, aimed at strengthening compliance, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing revenue generation across the state.

Dr. Chimezie Agbakwuru, Head of Debt Management and Enforcement and Coordinator of the Haulage Project, highlighted the progress recorded so far, key achievements, and operational challenges requiring the support and collaboration of stakeholders for effective resolution.

During the meeting, Super Agents had the opportunity to engage with members of the Interim Market Management Committee (IMC), fostering dialogue and strengthening partnerships necessary for the successful implementation of the initiative.

The Executive Chairman of IIRS, Justice R. Okoye, emphasized the growing acceptance and success of haulage systems across various states in Nigeria. He noted that the introduction of e-ticketing platforms has significantly improved revenue collection processes while creating employment opportunities and promoting transparency.

The Executive Chairman expressed confidence in the prospects of the Imo State Haulage Initiative, stating that with sustained commitment, stakeholder cooperation, and public compliance, the project is well-positioned to deliver similar benefits to the state.

He also introduced the OCORA Initiative, a pioneering Imo State-owned programme championed by IIRS and regarded as the first of its kind in the South-East. The initiative is designed to integrate the informal sector into the state’s economic framework, broaden the tax base, and promote greater participation in economic development.

He likewise called on stakeholders to embrace both the Haulage and OCORA initiatives, stressing that they align with the vision of the Imo State Government to leverage technology, expand the tax net, improve service delivery, and drive inclusive economic growth for the benefit of all residents.

The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to support the initiatives and work collaboratively towards achieving their objectives.
