Mr. Justice Okoye, Chairman of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), received Hon. Udeh Sam JP, the Imo State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), for a collaborative discussion on revenue collection.
Mr. Okoye emphasised the need to integrate the union into the new Revenue Management System (RMS) for effective levy collection. He raised some challenges which include: drop in tax compliance by the union as regards the 2021 agreement with the Service.
Hon. Udeh Sam explained that various challenges had contributed to the remittance shortfalls. He noted that operational issues, lack of functional transport parks, and “sit-at-home” days significantly disrupted collections.
Mr. Okoye suggested that the union could help expand the state’s tax base. He also established that working together will ensure transparency and accountability.
The NURTW Chairman voiced the need for suitable transport parks in the State and solicited the services’ support in training NURTW members on using the RMS portal.
He also suggested that NURTW should handle daily ticketing, spillage fees, and other levies to streamline operations and boost revenue collection.
Mr. Okoye appreciated the union chairman’s commitment and assured him that a strengthened partnership would be key to enhancing Imo State’s internally generated revenue, fostering growth and efficiency.
