The Chairman of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Justice Okoye (FCA), alongside his managerial team, attended the monthly general meeting and technical session organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Owerri District Society, on Saturday, 26th April 2025.
The session, themed “Digital Taxation and IGR: Pathway to Financial Stability of the State, the IIRS chairman Justice Okoye who facilitated the meeting expressed his appreciation to the Chairman of ICAN Owerri, Mr. D.C.S. Alaribe, and the entire membership of the Institute for the opportunity to share his expertise. In his presentation, he emphasized the critical role of harnessing digital taxation, highlighting its numerous benefits for enhancing the Imo State tax system.
Mr. Okoye informed members about the deployment of the Revenue Management System (RMS), which has significantly reduced revenue leakages, led to a remarkable increase in the State’s revenue, and simplified the tax collection processes. He noted improvements in areas such as E-ticketing, issuance of Tax Clearance Certificates, vehicle documentation, and the generation of harmonized assessments and demand notices.
The IIRS Chairman also stressed the need for ICAN members to support the digital tax collection system by promoting consistent public enlightenment and sensitization initiatives. During his session, he underscored the importance of adopting the “4Ps” in the canon of taxation: The People, Partnership, The Platform, and The Process.
