The Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), under the leadership of the Executive Chairman, Justice Remigius Okoye, held its quarterly engagement with representatives of commercial banks operating across the state. The meeting was convened to review the current state of revenue administration, evaluate past resolutions, and strengthen collaboration between the service and its banking partners in a bid to enhance Imo State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The Executive Chairman expressed appreciation to the banks for their continued cooperation and support towards the revenue drive of the state. He acknowledged that the partnership between IIRS and the financial institutions has led to notable improvements in revenue collections. He went on to recognize and commend the top performing banks in terms of IGR remittance for the quarter, he encouraged other banks to emulate their performance by stepping up their compliance levels, technical efficiency, and responsiveness to taxpayer needs.
The meeting served as an opportunity to evaluate the implementation of previously agreed resolutions. These included the online verification of Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC) and ongoing trainings of bank tellers and officers on the use of the Revenue Management System (RMS), and improvements in teller conduct and customer handling at bank branches. Justice Okoye noted that while progress had been recorded in these areas, there was still room for improvement, particularly in reducing error rates in revenue transactions and enhancing public trust in the process.
He emphasized the need for banks to provide regular feedback to the service on challenges faced in the field and areas where collaboration can be strengthened. He further appealed to all banks to play a more active role in sensitizing the public on the importance and usage of the Revenue Management System, stressing that public enlightenment is essential to achieving zero error rates in state revenue transactions.
The Executive Chairman thanked all participants for their presence and their commitment to the IIRS vision. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to transparency, digital transformation, and inter-agency cooperation. He expressed optimism that, with sustained collaboration and responsiveness from all parties, the state’s IGR will continue on its upward trajectory, ultimately supporting the government’s development agenda for the people of Imo State.
