The Acting Executive Chairman of Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Mr. Justice Okoye met with the members of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors Association Imo State Chapter led by the Chairman, Mr. Eboh Joseph on Tuesday 15th October 2024 at the IIRS Head Office.
Mr. Okoye welcomed the association members and expressed concern over their low compliance with tax and levy payments from 2022-2023. He sought to understand the challenges faced in fulfilling their tax obligations.
In response, the association Chairman expressed his concern about the issuance of varying harmonized assessments with the same taxes and levies. He suggested that creating clear guidelines for tax payments based on their operational categories—primary, secondary, and tertiary—would enhance compliance.
To that point, IIRS Chairman advised that they should group the association based on their operational category for easy generation of harmonized assessment and he further requested for the comprehensive list of their members.
He emphasized that Personal Income Tax is mandatory for all members.
The association also sought for waivers on outstanding liabilities to give members a fresh start. Additionally, they appealed to the Service for a copy of the harmonized assessment to study and identify the assessments peculiar to them.
In response, Mr. Okoye clarified that tax collection is governed by Imo State Revenue Law and that any waivers must adhere to legal provisions and the Governor’s discretion. He assured them of getting the harmonized assessment as requested.
Mr. Okoye also announced the implementation of a new tax management solution that would streamline the tax payment process.
